Black Friday Greenwashing – Shop Ethical Instead
Black Friday weekend is approaching! Watch out for the big brands Black Friday greenwashing traps and #ShopEthicalInstead. Make your purchase matter by buying less and buying better! Supporting small businesses doesn’t mean missing out on great deals! Read on to find out about our amazing Black Friday Deals!
Sustainability charity Hubbub found that two-thirds of people in the UK don’t enjoy participating in Black Friday, and half feel uncomfortable with the whole idea. This has led to Brands making bigger and bigger promises in their advertising campaigns, promises that they can’t keep. Navigating this greenwashing minefield can be a challenging and time-consuming task at an already overwhelming time of year.
Luckily this is not something you have to undertake alone. Thanks to Sian Conway-Wood and Ethical Hour all the hard work has already been done for you!
How to avoid the greenwashing
As the founder of Ethical Hour, Eco Influencer of the Year 2018, and winner of multiple awards, Sian Conway-Wood is undoubtedly an authoritative voice when it comes to selecting truly ethical brands. She has spent ‘almost a decade building an influential network of over 77,000 changemakers’ helping her influence national policies and individuals alike. Like Sian, we should all aim to be warriors, not worriers! We can all do what we can with what we have, helping to make the change we want to see in the world. Her recent book, Buy Better, Consume Less: Create Real Environmental Change (£14.99, Waterstones.com), shows the power our shopping choices can have and gives easy-to-understand practical advice on how to use your own voice, hold brands accountable, and make real change.
#ShopEthicalInstead shows that Sian really practices what she preaches, using her expertise as a communication strategist and her impressive list of contacts, she has created a successful campaign that has already reached over 2.5 MILLION people!
#ShopEthicalInstead is a fantastic campaign by #EthicalHour that takes the effort out of conscious Christmas shopping. They sift out all the greenwashing nonsense so you don’t have to! #ShopEthicalInstead highlights small businesses with ethical values at their core, not just in their advertising campaign. This gives shoppers a positive alternative to Black Friday greenwashing. By encouraging people to support small, ethical and sustainable businesses #ShopEthicalInstead helps people vote with their wallets for a better world.
We’re very happy to be part of this campaign! We have been introduced to loads of new brands selling everything from toys, gifts for him and her, to food and plastic-free stocking fillers!
